ISO 27001:2022 8.8: Management of technical vulnerabilities
ISO 27001:2022 8.8 covers Management of technical vulnerabilities. The held text names 5 evidence records for it, the first being Statement of Applicability entry for control A.8.8, showing inclusion or justified exclusion, implementation status and the risks it.... The common gap an assessor flags is The asset inventory is incomplete, so unknown software is never scanned or patched.
The organization is to gather information about technical vulnerabilities in the information systems it uses, assess how exposed it is, and take suitable action. Purpose (stated in ISO/IEC 27002:2022): prevents exploitation of technical vulnerabilities. As an Annex A reference control, it is compared with the controls determined in risk treatment (6.1.3 c) and recorded in the Statement of Applicability as included or excluded, with the justification and implementation status (6.1.3 d); implementation guidance is ISO/IEC 27002:2022 8.8.
What evidence supports 8.8?
- Annex A technological controlStatement of Applicability entry for control A.8.8, showing inclusion or justified exclusion, implementation status and the risks it treats
- Annex A technological controlA software asset inventory with vendor, product, version, deployment location and responsible owner
- Annex A technological controlDefined vulnerability management roles and a list of monitored vulnerability information sources
- Annex A technological controlAuthenticated scan results and penetration test reports by authorized testers, with verification scans after patching
- Annex A technological controlRemediation timelines by severity with measured performance, and risk records weighing the vulnerability against update risk
Where this requirement comes from
This is our own statement of ISO 27001:2022 8.8, read from the copy we hold (licensed complete copy) and stated in our words, not the standard verbatim. The framework as we hold it.
Common gaps an assessor flags
- The asset inventory is incomplete, so unknown software is never scanned or patched
- Remediation timelines are routinely missed with no risk acceptance
- Third-party libraries in in-house code are not tracked for vulnerabilities
- There is no way for external researchers to report vulnerabilities
How it maps to SOC 2
- CC7.1 high Technical vulnerability management identifies susceptibility to new vulnerabilities.
A link is a topical overlap with a confidence and a reason. It does not establish that meeting one requirement satisfies the other, and it is not certification.
